Be Frugal Today #12: Keep Gift Bags You Receive for Re-Gifting

This is such an easy frugal tip, but it’s so important if you do a lot of gift giving.  Back in the peak gift-giving days of my big family (lots of kids, lots of birthday parties, graduations, and huge holiday celebrations), it seemed like I was wrapping presents every week for someone.
Gift bags make wrapping presents so much faster than wrapping paper, but can definitely drive up the price of your present.  Gift bags cost anywhere from $2 to $6 per gift bag, depending on the size you need for your present.  If you multiply this cost by all the gifts, even just for Christmas presents, the price can be devastating to your monthly frugal budget.

The simple fix for this excessive cost is to keep gift bags you received for re-gifting.  Regifting means giving something again, which is a frugal way to make the most of your resources.
It always breaks my heart to see someone pull a present out of a gift bag and throw the tissue paper and the bag right into the trash pile.  Chances are, it still looks brand new since it’s only been unfolded once, had a present gently placed inside, then handed to the recipient.
Keep your gift bags, starting now!  If you started tomorrow and kept every gift bag you receive that is still in like-new condition, you’d accumulate a variety of usable gift bags for every occasion in a short time.  Just fold them up neatly and put them in your gift-giving center with the wrapping paper, even if that’s just in a plastic storage container or dresser drawer.
Next time you are getting ready to give a gift, check your gift bags re-gifting supply before you buy a new bag to give away!
