Be Frugal Today #10: Have an Adult Halloween Costume Swap With Another Couple

Adult Halloween costumes can be really expensive, especially for costumes that are really detailed or have a lot of accessories.  If you and your spouse have another couple that you are friends with (and roughly the same size), you can start planning and purchasing Halloween costumes together for a costume swap.
Here’s how it works: you and the other couple decide on 2 sets of costumes you’d like to wear for Halloween. Pick who will wear which costume this year and who will wear it next year.
As an example, let’s say the costumes in set #1 are Luke and Leia from Star Wars and the costumes in set #2 are Damon and Elena from The Vampire Diaries.  Decide which couple gets set #1 this year, and then they will wear set #2 next year.  The same goes for the other couple, but the costumes will be reversed.  You will both split the cost exactly in half and buy both sets of costumes now, that way the financial aspect is fair.
This way, you’ll be getting 2 years worth of great costumes for half the price!

Many Halloween costumes for adults are one size fits all, so just make sure that they are sized appropriately to fit both men or both women when you trade costumes. After Halloween, remember to clean the costumes and package them up in large plastic zipper bags with all the accessories so they don’t get lost.
If you like the Halloween costume swap idea and have a larger group of friends who want to participate, try a community costume swap.  Everyone brings their old Halloween costumes with the intention of trading them for good to get a new-to-you costume which will cost you nothing at all!  This type of adult costume swap works well for church groups and neighborhoods as well.
