All of us who have given birth to or raised children anywhere in the world during the last 21 years know who The Wiggles are. 4 upbeat Australian fellows who wear blue, yellow, purple and red shirts, sing, dance and tour the world making children happy – those are our Wiggles! Here is the Wiggles’ website, in case you want to have a peek.
I love the Wiggles probably more than my kids do, and I’m not alone. I’d listen to their music even if the kids weren’t with me! The songs all bring back a memory and a feeling for me of nostalgia, that feeling of what it felt like when my babies were little and learned to love those wiggly smiles.
The first wiggles show I ever saw was Wiggly, Wiggly World, one which we borrowed from our library for a week at a time. When “In the Big Red Car I Like to Ride” comes on, I remember the fall when I worked so hard pulling 12-15 hour days every day with my little champ right in front of my desk. My son got exactly 2 hours of TV time during the entire day, and usually I chose a Wiggles DVD for part of it. He would dance and sing as I worked and sung along with the Wiggles songs. I love Jeff, Greg, Murray, and Anthony!
In 2006, the lead singer, Greg, retired because his health problems meant he could no longer tour. After that, we tried a couple of “Sam DVDs”, shows which featured Greg’s replacement, Sam Moran. Neither me nor the kids could accept him as the new wiggle and we went back to watching only pre-2006 Wiggles shows.
I almost cried with happiness when the Wiggles let Sam go in January 2012 and brought back the “real” yellow Wiggle, Greg! However, after only 5 months with all the original Wiggles back together, our favorite 4 kids’ performers made an outrageous announcement.
See the video of the Wiggles’ announcement below:
It’s true, the Wiggles are going on their last ever tour with all the original 4 members, the Wiggles Celebration Tour. My husband and I want to go to this event more than the kids do! The tour is going on right now in the USA with a lot of dates still open. If you want to check for tickets near you, go to the Wiggles 2012 concert schedule.
The Wiggles are bringing in 3 new Wiggles to tour with Anthony starting next year. The new yellow Wiggle is even a lady! I know my daughters will be huge supporters of that addition to the group! Click to see the 3 new Wiggles and read their bios.
I’m so happy for all the Wiggles changes, and even though it seems like something that’s just for children, these 4 gifted performers are a permanent part for me of the memory of raising my children. Their singing and dancing, smiling and laughing, wanting to play guitar like Murray and eat healthy fruit salad like Anthony, these are good memories of motherhood that I’ll have forever.
