It performs beautifully. Ubuntu Linux is familiar looking enough so there isn't much new stuff to learn. It really is very similar to Windows. When you install Ubuntu, the installation already includes Open Office, GIMP, photo management software (similar to Picassa or iPhoto), a music player, and some cool time-wasters (games). It's ready to go right out of the box more so than Windows and Mac OS X. Most people will never have to install any additional software. GIMP is pretty cool, but I still have a strong preference for Photoshop. I have used OpenOffice for Mac, PC, and Linux. It performs beautifully.
