A very interesting and compelling post. I personally feel that it is very important for the parent to know how to draw the line between what one wishes the child to know and what the child is able to learn through homeschooling that he will not be able to receive otherwise. I let my children attend playschool while still homeschooling them so they have the best of both worlds.

I loved this post. I think about these things a lot too, as we look forward to having kids (hopefully soon). As a former librarian, I highly recommend you see what you can get from the library. Books and DVDs for free plus internet resources you would otherwise have to pay for are certainly all there waiting for you.

I taught myself painting from books. I keep learning new homemaking and DIY skills from books and of course the internet. We are so fortunate to have so much available to us these days.

I used to help the homeschooling parents a lot as a librarian. They told me just what the previous commenter did – they learned together as they went along. The children also learn to not be intimidated by learning new things through doing this, which is probably at least as important a lesson as many of the things we’d like to teach them.

Great post, this is exactly why we have chosen to homeschool our kids. I want to be the one who teaches them all these things. I didn’t start out knowing very much though, I went to public school as a kid and came home to dinner on the table, my room cleaned up, and everything in order. I had to learn many skills as an adult. I learned to cook by watching cooking shows, taking a class here and there, and reading. I learned to sew by making friends with someone who knew how and learned from her. This year we are planting a garden for the first time. I don’t know anything about gardening, but we have already spent a weekend volunteering at a greenhouse, we have checked out many books from the library, and we are asking people who do know. We are learning together as a family.
It is fun, and I hope it is preparing my kids for adulthood.
