Frugal Deep-Fry Fish Batter Recipe

Recipe: Barbi’s Frugal Deep-Fry Fish Batter

This frugal batter recipe is great for deep frying fish if you want it to taste restaurant-style. I had fish to fry, but had no beer to make a beer batter or Tempura mix. All the recipes I knew took one of those two ingredients, and I knew I could make a batter without an unnecessary (and expensive) trip to the grocery store. This batter is SO GOOD that people ask for the recipe while they’re eating it, no kidding! Why is it frugal? It’s made from inexpensive basic kitchen ingredients that most people keep on hand.  This recipe is written for a deep fryer.

Ingredients:

1 cup Flour
1/2 cup Water
1/2 cup Milk
1 tbsp Baking Powder
1 1/4 tsp Salt
1 1/4 tsp Vinegar

Directions for making batter:
1. Add flour, baking powder and salt to large mixing bowl.
2. Add water, milk and vinegar to bowl.
3. Mix well.

Directions for cooking fish:
1. Preheat oil in deep fryer to 370°.
2. Line a plate with paper towels.
3. Cut fish into small to medium chunks.
4. Roll each chunk in batter until well-coated.
5. Place coated fish into hot oil for 5-7 minutes, depending on how dark you like your coating.
6. Once cooked, place fish on lined plate to absorb oil and cool.
