How to Guest Post

Guest Post

Join our Team as a Guest Poster!

We’re glad you’re interested in guest posting here at Homemaker Barbi! We love to showcase great writers with useful information to share with our readers. From our point of view, guest posting should benefit everybody involved- letting us share your valuable content with our large audience, and bringing you additional traffic, publicity, and new subscribers to your site at the same time. Everybody’s a winner! We often use guest posts as a way to scout for and invite new contributing writers for our sites as well.

To see if we are a good fit to be working together, we’ve laid out this informational page about guest posting at HomemakerBarbi.com. Let’s get started!

Before reading the rest of this page, it’s important that you read our requirements on exclusivity. We only publish exclusive content on this site, which means you won’t find it anywhere else. We are VERY SERIOUS about this point. We can’t republish articles you’ve published elsewhere (anywhere) – we’ll need you to write an entirely new and original article.  If this point is a deal breaker for you (for some people it is, and that’s okay – we understand), then don’t submit your content to us. Why is this necessary? Google provides penalties for duplicate content, and we don’t want to incur penalties for our site or yours. Some people don’t think Google PageRank is important; we do. To us, higher PageRank means better advertising, which allows us to bring more high-quality material to our readers for free!

If you do NOT agree to accept the following statement, please DO NOT submit any article or pitch to Homemaker Barbi for possible publication:

By submitting any content to Homemaker Barbi for possible publication as a guest post, I agree to be bound to the following statement AND the Guidelines for Guest Posting: I agree not to republish the article, photo, or other content I have submitted to Homemaker Barbi (that is accepted for publication), in part or in its entirety, on my website or any website, RSS feed, email subscription, or any other in any format (written or electronic), including but not limited to email, article database, newsletter, e-book, book, magazine, newspaper or website, media or technology now known or hereafter developed.  I confirm that this material has never been previously published or distributed in any format, including but not limited to e-mail, article database, newsletter, e-book, book, magazine, newspaper or website, media or other technology.

I understand that I may not sell, publish, or distribute any content that I provide to Homemaker Barbi as a guest poster, and any attempt to do so will result in my guest poster status being revoked immediately and the Homemaker Barbi company taking full legal recourse."

With that out of the way, let’s get down to the specifics and the fun stuff!

How can I become a guest poster at Homemaker Barbi?

First, make sure you agree to (and would be willing to sign your name to) the above statement about republishing. Second, read the Guidelines for Guest Posting and make sure you agree to those as well. Next, send us an email to let us know you’re interested at guestpost(at)homemakerbarbi.com. In your email, please include:

  • Your real name.
  • Names and links to sites you contribute to, own, or write for.
  • Possible topics you would like to write about.

Do I have to send the full article or can I send a post/query?

Either way is fine. Full articles allow us to make a decision quickly.  Queries are also great, since we can work with you to fine-tune the subject matter before the article is written, saving you valuable rewrite time. We receive a lot of submissions, and it is not possible to use them all, so we appreciate your understanding if yours is rejected. Please feel free to resubmit either the same article or a different article at a future time, as the rejection may have just been bad timing for the subject matter, and is in no way a rejection of you or your writing abilities!

How are authors credited?

All guest post authors are credited with a byline where their full article appears on the site and in RSS and email subscriptions. The only place a byline does not appear is in the featured preview block. Please provide your bio / website blurb which is to appear at the beginning or end of your guest post. Your bio / blurb should be no longer than 300 characters. As an example, here is what our blurb looks like:

“The following is a guest post written by Danelle “Barbi” Ice, creator of HomemakerBarbi.com.  Homemaker Barbi is an online magazine packed with free resources and specializing in homemaking, frugal living, and family life.  If you like this article, please subscribe to Homemaker Barbi for free.”

What to write about

Please spend some time reading through our site to get a feel for our topics, departments, and subject matter. Submitting articles and queries that are on-topic and relevant to our website’s mission will increase chances that your material will be published here.

Our audience loves practical information! You may have noticed that we have a lot of how-to articles, tips, informative and educational material, and tutorials. But we also have a lot of column-style, first-person articles that provide motivation, inspiration, real-life stories and experiences that help readers relate to the authors. Whichever format you choose to write in is fine!

Length of articles

Length of articles may vary, just make sure they’re long enough to cover the topic chosen. All articles must be a minimum of 350 words long, but there is no maximum length.

Spelling, grammar, and editing

Since spell check and grammar check come standard on most word processing software these days, we expect your submission to be free of spelling and grammatical errors! The articles will still pass through our editors, but please make their job easy by doing your part first. Thank you! Although we may edit for spelling, grammar, and format, we won’t be changing your article for content. If we require edits to be made or rewrites, we’ll send you a request by e-mail.

Format

We love list-based articles, as well as articles with subheadings to make it easy to read, and graphics to make it look good. Our editors can fix the article’s format to make it more closely match the style at Homemaker Barbi. However, you can help us save time and speed the publication of your article by doing these simple formats ahead of time:

  • If you use a numbered list in your article, please put the numbers in bold.
  • Please wrap the title of the article with <h1> tags.
  • If us
ing subheadings throughout your article, please wrap them with <h2> tags.
  • Please insert your website blurb at the end of the article in italics.

Images

Graphics cannot be any wider than 590 pixels. If submitting images or graphics, make sure you have permission to use them and include proper credit in your article with links to the source as required. If our legal department is notified that we have images in use without permission, rest assured that YOU’LL be hearing from the graphic’s owner next!

Graphics can be inserted in the article, or included in your e-mail as attachments. If you have them on Flickr, you can also send links for us to find them there. Whichever method you choose, will be hosting the images on our server for publication.

What will get an article rejected?

There are a few things that will flip the switch and get your article automatically rejected. Some of these are listed below:

  • Swearing -we don’t publish anything with profanity.
  • Articles which are overly self-promotional. The website/author bio is there to promote you already, so please keep the content objective.
  • Articles with affiliate links included. We prefer to keep ours on our site and yours on your site. (This includes coupon codes.)
  • Articles promoting or selling a product, company, or service.
  • Negative articles. We keep our content positive and mostly upbeat.
  • Articles making derogatory or defamatory statements about persons, companies, products, or places.
  • Articles referencing illegal activities, anything controversial, adult material, or pharmaceutical companies.

So now that you have the groundwork, please read through our Guidelines for Guest Posting.  Afterwards, e-mail us at guestpost(at)homemakerbarbi.com to get started. We look forward to working with you!
