Have you ever wondered why some people’s names look like this on twitter:
@homeeverafter
Instead of looking like this:
@HomeEverAfter ?
For a long time my username was all lowercase because I didn’t know the way to change it. When I signed up for twitter, I put my username in with all lowercase letters out of habit more than anything else. Soon, I began seeing people who had capitalized their names, and they looked much easier to read than mine.
I wanted to capitalize my username, and I knew it was possible because I saw others who had done it. I didn’t want to look silly for asking, in case it was a really easy solution! One day, I finally asked a man who had a regular looking capitalized name how he changed it, and he wouldn’t tell me…
We’d like to spare you the curiosity, wonderment (and possible snubbing by the guy who wouldn’t share the knowledge) by bringing you this quick and easy tip for how to capitalize your name on twitter!
How To Capitalize Your User Name on Twitter
If you registered your account at twitter with the name in all lowercase letters, you CAN change the capitalization without losing any of your followers or tweets. Here’s how:
- Login to your twitter account.

- Click the “Settings” link on the top right toolbar.
- You should now be on the “Account” tab.
- The second box from the top says “Username”, and in it you’ll find your unique twitter username that identifies your twitter stream.
- Click inside the box and change the letters you want to be in uppercase to capital letters.
- Make sure not to change the spelling of your username or add characters or take away characters.
There you have it! A quick and easy way to capitalize your username on twitter. As long as you don’t spell your username differently or change it to add or subtract letters, your followers and tweets will remain unchanged.

Works fine as long as you haven’t linked to your Twitter profile from another site.
Twitter URLs are case sensitive. If you change your username you won’t lose followers or tweets, but the offlsite links won’t work.
@Larry Brauner:
Actually, there is no problem if you have linked to your twitter profile from another site. Offsite links will still work. URLs on twitter are all converted to lowercase. So I can link to my twitter profile as
http://twitter.com/homemakerbarbi (how all my old links read)
or
http://twitter.com/HomemakerBarbi (how my new links read)
and either version will still actually take you to my real twitter page. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi ..I hope you can help me. Here is my dilemma. For a year now my twitter name has been capitalized and all was fine. Today, I notice my twitter name is in all lower case! -Weird. I followed your capitalization tute on how to change it back ( I already knew this, but since mine was changed out of the blue, I thought maybe something else was going on that I had no idea about)
Sooo anyways..Now, I followed your accurate directions to the T, it originally enters with a capitol, then.. when i hit enter, it automatically reverts back to lowercase! NOTHING will make my capitol letter stick! This is very frustrating lol Can someone help me out? I feel so stupid like I’m missing something obvious..lol Thanks!
Here in my care this is not working when ever i changed User name that change back every time in small automatically ..My Twitter User name is @ahsan_k
@ Bonnie and @Ahsan : Twitter may be having a problem. I’d recommend contacting their help department to see if they can fix it.
Danelle
Thank you =) I will contact Twitter.
First up respects to Danelle for coming up with this post! Heres the deal: Why capitalizing your name didn’t work. Its probably a firefox, or Chrome setting, because it ‘remembers’ your username, forcefully reverting it to lowercase. So either, ‘Clear all your saved username and passwords’ OR if this is too daunting, the easy solution is toinstall another browser, any client, like opera etc. Login to twitter afresh with your existing username eg:- tomsawyer. This time change your name to TomSawyer, and don’t check the option to remember your name etc… And you’re good to go. Now, go back to Firefox, chrome, as normal and enjoy your Twitter Goodness!
@Julius: Thanks for the help, Julius. Bonnie and Ahsan, please let me know if that trick works.

I posted this very issue in the twitter help section, and a commenter lead me to this site. I tried to change my name in the user settings but to no avail. If someone has found a definitive fix to this, please let me know — dwcasaz@gmail.com, @DanCasaz <—(how I'd LIKE my tag to appear)
Hi Julius! after racking my brains over this, the thought eventually occurred to me that maybe Firefox saving my password/acct info had something to do with it…but yes, the thought of loosing all my saved passwords was daunting to say the least..so I didn’t go there..lol duh..on my part.
But, Thanks to your advice, I simply went to internet explorer and logged onto Twitter, went to acct info and changed it up and walla!! YOU WERE CORRECT!!! My username is happily capitolized now..haha
THANK YOU SO MUCH JULIUS!!! YOU HAVE BEEN A GREAT HELP =) and thank you Danelle Ice for you’re wonderful blog, quick response and giving me a place to get my problem solved. =)
My post didn’t show up..hmmm.. I cant remember if it has to be approved or not. Just in case something happened to it, and it didn’t go thru.. I just want to say IT WORKED!!! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! =)
@Bonnie: Fantastic! So glad you got it fixed. Great to know the issue was browser-related and not a twitter problem. Happy we could help, and thx again to Julius!
@Dan: Please see the comment above by Julius for help on the issue. If that still doesn’t work, please put in a help ticket with the good people at Twitter.
Danelle
Thanks Danelle and Julius — I used another browser and got it fixed!
Just for clarification — I can still use the “remember me” option on my main browser (Firefox) and be ok?
Yesss…you can still use the “remember me” option on your main browser (Firefox) and your change will “stick”. It worked for me =)
Thanks of the tip, my username is much easier to read now!
Capitalized my twittername already, but found this site because I searched for possible problems using Capitalized names and Google/Twitter integrated connections.
The automatic RSS to Twitter seemed to stop working!
@Karel: If you’re using Twitterfeed, you’ll want to log back into their site with OAuth and reconfigure your RSS feed so that it still pulls the RSS items to your correct twitter URL.
