Do you have any recommendations for cleaning a smooth top stove without the expensive store-bought cleaners?

I couldn't agree more. I have owned a housekeeping agency for nearly 30 years and have had numerous people clean my home. One of the very best housekeepers we ever had cleaned almost everything with just soap and water! I was amazed. But I've been doing it ever since. So much easier and you never have to worry if there are chemicals on your countertops!! Now I wouldn't advise soap and water for the glass surfaces, the tub or toilet or, as you say, the oven, but otherwise what else do you need?? I hope you win some converts.
