These Halloween cupcake brains look very hard to make, but trust me – they’re easy. 

MAKE IT: Creepy Halloween Recipes: Green Monster Eyeballs (Mini Donuts)

You’ll get the hang of it after 2 practice cupcakes (and if you don’t, scrape the frosting off with a butter knife, put it back into your piping bag, and re-frost them again for more practice).

Below, we show you how to make the Halloween Spooky Brain Cupcakes with our easy to follow step by step instructions.  Make sure you have all you materials ahead of time and start when you have the patience to learn a new skill!

Yield: 2 dozen (24) cupcakes

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: As directed on cake mix package

Decorating Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients for Halloween Spooky Brain Cupcakes

• Chocolate cupcake mix
• Vanilla or cream cheese cake frosting

Tools needed:

• Cupcake pan
• 2 dozen cupcake papers
• Piping bag
• Cake decorating tip, size 12

	1.  Line cupcake pans with cupcake liners.  2.  Bake chocolate cupcakes as directed on package. 3.  Allow cupcakes to cool completely.
	4.  Lightly frost each cupcake with a thin layer of frosting.  This can have cupcake showing through since it is just a quick crumb coat. 5.  Cut the tip off of a disposable piping bag and insert a size 12 tip.  Fill the bag half full of icing.
	6.  Begin to pipe slow and steady.  Start in the middle of the cupcake and draw a straight line from front to back.
	7.  When you get to the back of the cupcake, round the corner and draw the outside of the circle.
	8.  Bring your frosting line back to the starting point, but don’t stop there.  You’ll now be making small squiggly lines up and down all the way across the cupcake. 9. When you come to the end, slowly stop squeezing and lift the bag away from the cupcake to end the frosting line.
	10.  When finished with the first half, repeat the same process for the second half.
	11.  Finally, you have your finished Halloween Spooky Brain Cupcakes!

The lifelike creepy Halloween Rabid Rats (Twinkies) recipe is one of my proudest scary Halloween food creations. Why, you ask?

Because our Halloween rabid rats are so lifelike that many people won’t be able to eat them.  Children are terrified by them, adults are repulsed by them…

What better to serve at your Halloween party?! 

Our rabid rats are actually made out of twinkies (covered in chocolate), but with some very creative sweet additions to make them look like real wicked rats straight out of the alley of any scary movie. 

Oh, but I forgot to mention that they still taste delicious!

MAKE IT: Creepy Halloween Recipes: Scary Watermelon Brain

These creepy Halloween rabid rats’ bodies are made from twinkies, coated in chocolate frosting, topped with black coconut (don’t worry – the details on how to make black coconut rat hair is below!). 

Plus, the scary Halloween rabid rats have tasty licorice tails and ears along with spicy red hot eyes.

Below, we show you how to make our exclusive Halloween Rabid Rats recipe with Home Ever After’s signature easy to follow step by step instructions.

Ingredients for Lifelike Halloween Rabid Rats (Twinkies)

• 1 pack of black licorice
• 1 bag of shaved coconut
• 1 box of Twinkies (store brand is fine; we used Great Value brand from Walmart)
• 1 box of Red Hots candies
• Chocolate cake frosting
• Black food coloring

Plus these supplies:

• Wax paper
• Spoon and butter knife
• Paring knife
• Metal spatula

Directions: How to Make Halloween Rabid Rats (Twinkies)

	1.  Start off with your ingredients and an unwrapped twinkie. Place the twinkie on wax paper.
	2.  Using a paring knife, slice off each side of the end of the twinkie.  You’ll end up with one pointed end which will become the rabid rat’s snout.
	3.  Next, use the paring knife to slice off the  top of the twinkie to form a slope down towards the snout point.
	4.  Set the twinkie aside.  It’s time to make the rat hair! Pour the shaved coconut into a bowl. Add back food coloring slowly while stirring to mix the color through.  Keep adding black dye and stirring until the coconut is a deep black color.
	5.  Back to the twinkie, we must add a layer of “glue” to hold the coconut in place.  This glue will be chocolate frosting.  Ice the twinkie with a thin layer of icing, taking care to cover all yellow spots.
	6.  Place the twinkie on a metal spatula to make it easy to maneuver the “rat” while applying the coconut. Scoop one spoonful of coconut at a time onto the rat.  Then, using the back of the spoon, mold the coconut onto the twinkie pressing firmly but gently. Cover all brown frosting areas with black coconut.
	Use the butter knife to slide under the rat and move it from the spatula back to the wax paper. 7.  Place 2 red hot candies above the snout for eyes.
	8.  Cut two small pieces of black licorice to form the rat’s ears.  Score each one in the middle with a knife, then fold in half.  Using the knife tip, make 2 small cuts for each ear.  Insert licorice in holes with the scored side up.
	5.  Using a new piece of black licorice, cut the end to a point and insert the licorice into the back of the rat to form a tail.
	6.  Finally, you have your finished Halloween rabid rats. They almost look too scary to eat!

Below, we show you how to make our scary Halloween Green Monster Eyeballs with easy to follow step by step instructions.

In fact, this Halloween green monster eyeballs recipe is so easy to follow that you can have your older children (age 4 and up) help you make them.  This also allows you to make a huge batch of spooky Halloween edible eyeballs without spending a lot of time on them!  Recruit your helpers to each do one part of the assembly process: little Suzy can be in charge of putting on all the green Lifesavers and little Johnny can put the M&Ms on top.

If you’re adventurous (which I know you are or you wouldn’t be here looking for how to make creepy Halloween treats!), make these green monster eyeballs and take them to work. Hide them in small clusters throughout the office and watch people’s reactions!  Of course, you should be flattered when your co-workers eventually eat your hideous Halloween concoctions.

Ingredients for Halloween Green Monster Eyeballs

• White powdered mini donuts
• Brown M&Ms candies
• Green (or blue) Lifesavers candies
• 1 tube of red cake decorating gel
• Several pieces of uncooked spaghetti

Directions: How to Make Halloween Green Monster Eyeballs

	1.  Line a cookie sheet, cutting board, or cake board with waxed paper. Lay out the white powdered mini donuts with even spacing.  leave yourself enough room to handle and decorate each eyeball (donut).
	2.  Place one green (or blue) Lifesaver candy in the middle of each powdered donut.
	3.  Push each Lifesaver down into the donut and turn gently to create a depression for the Lifesaver to sink into. It’s okay if this creates small cracks in the donuts – we’ll use those later.
	4.  Place one dark brown M&M candy on the top of each Lifesaver.  Make sure the M&M logo is face down.
	5.  Break a piece of uncooked spaghetti in half and use it to “dig” channels in the eyeball donuts.  These depressions will hold the red gel for the lines on the eyeballs. Make as many channels all the way around the eyeball as you would like to color in with red gel.
	6.  Squeeze your red cake decorating gel onto the tip of the hard spaghetti stick.
	7.  Fill the gel into the channel so that it looks sunken into the Halloween monster eyeball.
	6.  Finally, you have your finished Halloween Green Monster Eyeballs to scare and delight your children (and co-workers)!

Where Did the Halloween Watermelon Brain Come From?

The idea of the Halloween watermelon brain has bounced from Halloween party to haunted house to Halloween school carnival from year to year, but the real personalization comes from how you design it and what kind of setting you put it in.

Use your imagination to make the spooky scene appropriate for the setting, but don’t shy away from a Dr. Demented lab with scattered body parts or a Frankenstein scene with a big green monster lying in wait for his “brain” transplant!

Think outside the box and get wild with this creepy Halloween recipe! 

We put our Halloween melon brain in a Halloween / harvest setting with orange and purple, and it makes a great centerpiece for a Halloween dinner party.

You’ll need very few ingredients and tools to make this scary Halloween watermelon brain. In fact, your biggest investment in this spooky project will be the time to design your brain and make it look as real as possible while carving.  Be sure to print out a picture of a real brain before you start so you can make your Halloween carving look as real as possible.

Ingredients for the Halloween Watermelon Brain

1. Personal size seedless watermelon

2. Potato (or vegetable) peeler

3. Small paring knife (the smaller and sharper, the better)

Directions: How to Make a Halloween Watermelon Brain

	1.  Start with a personal size seedless  watermelon.  Cut it in half so that you have a flat bottom and enough round top to look like the finished brain.
	2.  Peel all of the green rind off of the watermelon.  To leave it looking greener, only peel off the top layer.  For a whiter or more transparent brain, peel off several layers. 3.  Clear all of the shavings into the trash can so you can start carving your watermelon brain masterpiece!
	4.  Carve a straight line down the middle of the melon from front to back to be the divider between the 2 brain hemispheres.  Be sure to make the line wide enough that you can see the separation.
	5.  Start carving curving, squiggly lines along your watermelon brain to create the coils of the brain material.  Eww! The curvier your lines are, the better.  Make the channels deep and wide so that you can see into the pink part of the watermelon (this makes the “brain” look even scarier in the dark with candles nearby).
	6.  Finally, you have your finished Halloween watermelon brain! Now comes the really fun part of deciding how you want to present it.

The Friends Church carnival needed prizes and snacks donated, so I thought our new box of Capri Sun goodies from Delicious Byte, Kraft Foods and House Party would be perfect. 

They sent us great swag, like 100% juices, Capri Sun frisbees, TerraCycle bags and pencil pouches, and more. 

I’m sure you’ve seen the TerraCycle bags before but didn’t know that’s what they were called.  They’re the super cool bags and purses made out of empty Capri Sun pouches. 

We headed out to the carnival to have a great time and while there, caught some great photos of costumed kids carrying around the Capri Sun prizes! 

Thanks to the great parents that let us take pictures of their little guys in costume.  Below we have Adelle and Lydia Patterson (top left), Loralai Bennett (top right), Kyler Bartlett (bottom right), and Ella Bergman (bottom left), all sporting their Capri Sun goodies.

Thanks go out to Kathie Stacy at Friends Church for setting up the Capri Sun prizes for the carnival.  I also had to capture my son’s temporary tattoo and fake mustache and beard face painting (shown below), which he got as prizes at  the game booths. 

Did I mention that we were dressed up as a pirate family?  We’ve been trying to do a family costume theme for years, and finally pulled off having 3 people match costumes this year. 

Here are my little pirates, Hannah and Truett, in their costumes. 

My husband, Michael, was “Captain DaddyBeard”, complete with pirate wig.  I’m way too pregnant to dream of fitting into a Halloween costume this year.  Little Seven was dressed as Minnie Mouse because she’s a princess, not a pirate!  (If you got that reference to the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Kindergarten Cop, good for you!)

How to Make the Halloween Pumpkin Patch Oreo Chocolate Cake

Want a spooky Halloween cake that’s good enough to eat?  Our Halloween pumpkin patch Oreo chocolate cake was created exclusively for Home Ever After by Danelle Ice.  This Halloween cake recipe is a great family baking and craft project that can be done with your kids to wow your Halloween party guests!  This is also a great Halloween treat to bake and take in to your child’s classroom for their Halloween party.

This was a super fun Halloween recipe to make, and my thanks go out to my helper and daughter, Hannah, for helping with the pumpkin assembly.  Thanks also to my husband, Michael, for the staging, lighting and final photography.  Now, here are the instructions you’ll need to bake and assemble your very own Halloween pumpkin patch Oreo chocolate cake!

Cooking Ingredients Needed

• 1 box of chocolate cake mix
• 1 can of chocolate cake frosting
• Cooking spray
• 1 bag of Oreo (or Great Value Twist & Shout) cookies, preferably with chocolate filling instead of white centers
• Eggs, vegetable oil, and water as directed in cake mix
• 11×9 clear glass baking dish
• Meat tenderizer
• Paper towel

Craft Supplies Needed

• Popsicle sticks (also called craft sticks)
• Orange, green and brown construction paper
• Orange, green and brown felt
• Markers
• Pipe cleaners
• Craft glue, Elmer’s glue, or glue stick
• Scissors
• Glitter

Directions

1.  Bake the cake.  Bake your chocolate cake according to the directions on the box.

 2.  Allow cake to cool thoroughly.  Do not remove from glass baking dish.

3.  Frost the cake.  Once your cake has completely cooled, you’re ready to ice the cake.

When applying the frosting, try to make the surface as level as possible, especially paying attention to fill extra icing into the edges where the cake may have pulled away from the baking dish.

4.  Crush the Oreo cookies into cookie crumbs.  Next, you need to turn your package of Oreo cookies into the crumbs that will form the “ground” in your Halloween pumpkin patch.  The easiest way to crumble Oreo cookies, since they have a sticky filling in the center, is as follows:

Line up Oreo cookies in a single layer on a plate.

Cover the Oreos with a single layer of paper towel or napkin.

Using the side of the metal meat tenderizer (not the ends with points, but the flat side), gently but firmly smash the cookies through the paper towel.  After finished, removed the paper towel and gently pull the pieces apart with your fingers into chunks.

The icing will hold sections together to give the appearance of “dirt” for your Halloween pumpkin patch.

The finished Oreo cookie crumbs will look like this:

5.  Make the “ground” on your cake.  To create the appearance of soil for the ground of your Halloween pumpkin patch cake, next you need to sprinkle the Oreo cookie crumbs on top of the icing.

You want a solid covering from corner to corner so that no icing is showing through.  This will allow you to hide the popsicle sticks when arranging your pumpkins.

6.  Create the pumpkins.  We were able to use foam glittery pumpkins with sticker backs that were purchased at Walmart in the craft section for our pumpkin patch.  However, you can easily make your own pumpkins out of construction paper, felt, pipe cleaners, markers and popsicle sticks.

To make pumpkins from foam stickers:

First, trace the outline of your foam pumpkin shapes on orange felt and cut out the pieces.

What you’ll have when assembling each pumpkin are a foam shape, an identical felt shape, and a popsicle stick.

Lay the felt piece flat on the table.  Place a popsicle stick in the center, as high up the pumpkin as possible.

Next, peel the adhesive back off of the pumpkin sticker and press firmly onto felt and popsicle stick.

Your finished pumpkin will look like this from the back:

To make pumpkins from construction paper:

If you don’t have premade foam pumpkin stickers, you can still make this Halloween pumpkin patch chocolate cake using construction paper for your pumpkins.  It takes a little more time, but can be a great project for you and your kids to do together.

Follow the steps above for making foam pumpkins, only first, draw  and cut out a shape from construction paper to use as your “model” pumpkin.  Once you are satisfied with its size and shape, trace the pumpkin onto construction paper over and over again, then cut out the pumpkins.  On the front of the construction paper pumpkins you can use glue and glitter to create the shimmery effect we used, or just use markers to decorate pumpkins or draw on jack o lantern faces!

Pumpkin stems can be made out of either colored construction paper or pipe cleaners.  To use a pipe cleaner, simply arrange it at the top of the pumpkin before gluing the felt on to the back of the construction paper.

7.  Put your pumpkins in the pumpkin patch!  The last step is the most fun.  One at a time, take each pumpkin and firmly press the popsicle stick into the cake.  You can insert them straight up and down or at an angle for a more realistic look.  We also made a few trees for the back of our Halloween pumpkin patch cake, as well as some leaves to sit on the “ground” next to the pumpkins.  Using smaller pumpkins is a great way to add variety in the front of your cake.  When making small pumpkins and leaves, make sure to break the popsicle sticks in half so they can sit lower.

8.  Eat and enjoy!  Make sure to remove the pumpkins, trees, and leaves before cutting the cake into pieces.  If you choose to leave them in place, make sure to let guests know that the toppings are not edible!

Halloween is such a fun day. Although my family doesn’t trick or treat, we do cook up some ghoulish delights and spend the evening watching scary movies. Many different foods can become spooky by simply renaming them or changing the way you present them.

Here are some scary Halloween foods that have been hits around here over the years.

6 Ultra-Scary Halloween Foods

Jack-O-Lantern Brownies:  Cook up your favorite brownie recipe or use a mix. Bake in a round cake pan or deep dish pizza pan. Once they’ve cooled, frost with cream cheese icing you have tinted orange with food coloring. Then use candy and assorted icing colors to decorate as a Jack-O-Lantern. My mother made these when I was a child and I always loved helping.

Goblin Dip and Chips: This is nothing more than your average guacamole. The green color is what gives it a goblin name.

Eyeball Salad: This is nothing more than green and red grapes with a cream cheese dressing. The recipe I use can be found here: Best Grape Salad.

Worm Sandwiches:  Cut bun length hot dogs into six or eight slices, length wise. You will need one hot dog per person. Saute the hot dog strips with sliced onion in a touch of butter until the onions just start to brown. Serve with traditional condiments such as "blood" (ketchup) and "ooze" (mustard).

Mummy Dogs:  These are pigs in the blanket made with hot dogs that have been wrapped in refrigerated bread sticks. Bake on a greased cookie sheet following the directions from the can of bread sticks. Serve with the same condiments as mentioned above.
